Eduroam Wi-Fi

What is EDUROAM?
The eduroam system allows you to access the wireless network without contacting local administrators. Institutions participating in the project undertake to comply with a common security policy and to trust the information provided by other institutions included in the system. In a typical situation, a laptop user will be able to access the network at another institution without having to configure anything. The settings used at their own institution will allow them to access the network anywhere else. This does not mean that access is anonymous and uncontrolled; on the contrary, every access to the network is recorded and any abuse can later be linked to a specific person.Access to the eduroam network requires user authentication in accordance with the 802.1x standard. Such authentication can be enabled for wireless connections. The 802.1x standard allows for preliminary verification of whether a user has the right to access the network. Authentication can be performed using several methods, but the choice of method depends on the settings at the home institution, not at the institution where the user wants to connect. In addition to authentication, transmission encryption is automatically performed using a one-time session key; this key is exchanged multiple times during the session. Based on the authorization data, the user can be assigned to the appropriate security group and given the appropriate rights. Thanks to this approach, the user has greater rights in their home institution than guests, even though the configuration parameters remain the same.
